HANDS-ON TRAINING

Some one million newborns die each year from the inability to breathe at birth. The INMED Professional Qualification Course in Helping Babies Breathe (HBB Master Trainer Course, 2nd Edition) is an evidence-based educational program to prepare learners to teach basic neonatal resuscitation techniques in low-resource locations to benefit midwives, mid-level providers, and traditional birth attendants. HBB can also be effectively combined with other elements of the Helping Babies Survive series, including Essential Care for Every Baby and Small Babies (ECEB-ECSB). Helping Babies Breathe is an initiative of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), US Agency for International Development (USAID), Saving Newborn Lives, and the National Institute of Child Health and Development.

This course may be taken individually or applied toward select INMED graduate credentials.

At the completion of the Professional Qualification Course in Helping Babies Breathe, learners will be able to demonstrate using case-studies and simulation how to:

• Identify delivery risks for mothers and newborns
• Mitigate delivery risks for mothers and newborns
• Provide for the healthcare needs of newborns at delivery, include ventilatory support when appropriate
• Transfer newborn healthcare skills to other providers

INMED Professional Qualification Courses combine dedicated online preparation with in-person skills training and competency-based assessment. Learners complete foundational learning activities prior to attending an intensive hands-on training experience designed to strengthen practical clinical skills.

Course Format

• Required online preparation activities completed prior to training
• Faculty-guided learning materials and assignments
• One-day, in-person training experience
• Direct faculty feedback and coaching
• Competency-based assessment and verification
• Time Commitment

Learners should anticipate dedicating time to pre-course preparation activities before attending the in-person training session. The in-person training component consists of approximately 8 hours of active participation, skills practice, and competency assessment.

Skills Practice

Learners participate in guided hands-on exercises designed to strengthen competency, confidence, and practical application of the skills taught throughout the course.

Education Methods

Learners will achieve the competency objectives through the following education methods:

• Interactive online learning techniques

• Interactive live presentations

• Skill stations for increasing technical proficiency

• Case studies for developing clinical judgment

Evaluation Methods & Requirements For Successful Completion

This course is graded pass/fail. Successful pass requires:

• Maternal-Newborn Health Post-Test ≥80
• Satisfactory demonstration of all required skills
• Complete course evaluation and credit claims forms at the course conclusion.

Certification

Participants who successfully complete the course of study and who pass the final examinations will receive the INMED Professional Qualification in Essential Newborn Care 1.

Academic Credit

Academic credit earned is 1 credit hour.

Verification

Verification of the educational experience will be provided to any learner’s affiliated school or residency program. Those who do not pass the final examinations will receive a certificate of attendance.

Cost

There is no additional charge for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit.

Institute for International Medicine is accredited by the Kentucky Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
