Some one million newborns die each year from the inability to breathe at birth. The INMED Professional Qualification Course in Helping Babies Breathe (HBB Master Trainer Course, 3nd Edition) is an evidence-based educational program to prepare learners to teach basic neonatal resuscitation techniques in low-resource locations to benefit midwives, mid-level providers, and traditional birth attendants. HBB can also be effectively combined with other elements of the Helping Babies Survive series, including Essential Care for Every Baby and Essential Care for Small Babies (ECEB-ECSB). Helping Babies Breathe is an initiative of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), US Agency for International Development (USAID), Saving Newborn Lives, and the National Institute of Child Health and Development.

This is a hybrid learning experience that combines online preparation in Maternal-Newborn Health with a one-day in-classroom workshop to equip participants with basic newborn resuscitation skills, emphasizing respiratory support, as well as coaching to partner with local health leaders to transfer these skills to birth attendants in resource limited settings. Academic credit earned is 1 credit hour.

Proceed through this content in chronological order. Click the “Mark Complete” button at the end of each section. Note: To view the full width of each page without scrolling left to right, please collapse the left-side menu using the arrow in the top left of the page. This online learning requires approximately 6 hours to complete and must be completed prior to participating in the in-classroom section.

Give special attention to the two last sections. Helping Babies Breathe Learner Resources includes the presentations, facilitator flip chart, OSCE exam checklists, and protocols that will be used in the in-classroom section. At the conclusion of the day, please take a photo of your completed OSCE exam checklists and then turn in the paper copies to the course faculty.

Once you have finished the in-classroom workshop, open the Professional Qualification Course in Helping Babies Breathe Evaluation and click the link to open and complete the Course Evaluation. This is required in order for you to receive your continuing education certificate or certificate of completion, which will be emailed to you within 5 business days.
