Module Four: Disaster Response

Case Study: Overview of Disaster Response

Spanish Flu poster, 1918

Today, many international communities, NGOs, private organizations, medical associations, and volunteers are involved in disaster response activities. This was apparent in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and in the massive international response to the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Although disaster response tugs at the hearts of humanitarians and is often seen as heroic by both people responding and the public, good intentions can often cause harm because of a lack of training.

This module gives a brief overview of response activities. However, it is important to remember that in order for governments, NGOs, private organizations, and volunteers to really help vulnerable people and communities, they must participate in all phases of disaster management, not just response.
