Module Four: Health Leadership

Introduction to Health Leadership

Few health professionals are trained to be leaders

Health care is in crisis around the world, but the crisis is most grave in developing nations. In the face of largely preventable diseases, people must contend with ever-tightening resources in their struggle to preserve or restore health.

Health care crises cry out for wise leadership. Leaders who understand the root causes of ill health, who recognize effective interventions, and who possess the diplomatic skills necessary to implement interventions are essential to overcoming today's health care challenges.

Despite the need for health leadership, precious few individuals are taught to think as leaders in health care. Traditional medical training provides expertise in individual patient care, but it rarely addresses the social causes of disease and the weightier needs of communities as a whole.

Health leadership requires skill. It also requires motivation and perseverance. Armed with these virtues, health professionals can apply the following information to effectively guide health improvements in their particular communities.
