The field of international health involves a vast quantity of information. Effectively organizing this information is essential for both mastering it and identifying useful applications for it. One framework for organizing such information is by determinants of health. Determinants are usually defined in terms of those who are responsible for health: individuals, governments, health care professionals, industry, etc. But another useful approach is to identify determinants in terms of the health-influencing agents themselves: microorganisms, trauma, addictive substances, etc.
For the purpose of this course, the following major determinants of health will be referenced throughout. Health in developing nations is determined primarily by:
Nutrition
Contraception and safe obstetric care
Infectious disease prevention
Trauma prevention
Provision of medical care
For the sake of completeness, additional factors could be added, including substance abuse prevention, exercise, reduction in environmental toxins, etc. However, the main burden of disease in developing nations is related to the above factors (Gunatilleke, 1995).
