Some of the more marked symptoms of culture shock experienced by expatriates, in no particular order, include:
Bitterness
Boredom
Compulsive cleanliness
Depression
Excessive sleep
Excessive eating or drinking
Family tension
Homesickness
Irritability
Marital conflict
Negative stereotyping of host nationals
Poor work performance
Psychosomatic illnesses
Unexplainable weeping
Withdrawal from people, especially host nationals
The constellation and severity of such symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. They can also reappear in expatriates who seems to have initially adjusted well to a new culture.
