  SYNOPSIS

2005 was the year of world disasters. The tsunami in the Indian Ocean, devastating earthquake in Pakistan, and hurricanes in the Gulf are compelling health professionals to consider international service like never before. The Exploring Medical Missions Conference will provide the needed knowledge to be successful in international medicine, and will address international health issues, tropical diseases, cross-cultural skills, and health promotion strategies. It will also give participants an opportunity to network with individuals and organizations that are already active in the field.

  OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this conference, participants will be able to:
  • Provide the unique knowledge and skills for health professionals to successfully serve in the developing world
  • Increase understanding of the greatest threats to world health
  • Provide diagnostic and therapeutic insights into the common and unique "tropical" diseases of developing countries
  • Promote understanding of cross-cultural adaptation and communication
  • Increase awareness of those health promotion strategies most effective for developing nations
  • Provide practical information on how to incorporate medical missions into professional practice

  OPENING YEAR

200 people attended the first Exploring Medical Missions Conference, including 85 physicians, 20 nurses, 14 resident physicians and 20 medical students from Kansas University, University of Missouri-Kansas City and Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Attendees came from as far away as Angola, Africa!
